Children and Adolescents

CANA offers several comprehensive options for youth experiencing difficulties in their school or family life including outpatient, in-school, and in-home family therapy. Other services include intake, testing, assessment, play therapy, sexual abuse treatment, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and SCERTS. Our programs provide a framework to learn and understand how to directly address the social communication and emotional regulation of children as well as the core challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD), as well as other disabilities.

Outpatient Therapy

CANA offers one-on-one therapy for children, adolescents, and young adults with physical, intellectual, cultural, emotional, as well as social (PICES) skill challenges. We also provide services for youth experiencing parental divorce or separation, academic difficulties, symptoms of depression and other neurological disorders, sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, as well as other mental health challenges. We are client-centered and treat cases as whole clients in safe, culturally-supportive environments within our young clients’ schools or broader communities. Individual therapy is also a component of our adolescent center-based treatment program. Please call us at 952-456-7737 to learn more about how we can help.

We offer highly effective general outpatient therapy and habilitative skills training for children and adolescents experiencing depression, neurological or behavioral issues, histories of sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, and other severe mental health issues. Outpatient therapy for children and adolescents includes therapists who specialize in: play, family and group therapy, anger management, sexual abuse treatment, adolescent dialectical behavioral therapy, as well as Social Communication and Emotional Regulation of Children Therapy Support (SCERTS).

In-School

Our school-based services address school success, relationship building, mental health, chemical dependency, as well as parental involvement through support, parent advocacy, and case management. We provide mental health support to children and teens experiencing significant emotional and mental health issues that cannot be resolved within a classroom setting by teachers and/or administrators and that requires parental involvement. We work to empower parents to advocate for their children and build strong cultural and cross-cultural relationships with their schools.

Parent Innovative Cultural Leadership Minnesota Program

Our All Star Academy Parent Innovative Community Leadership Minnesota (PIC- Leadership Minnesota) works in partnership with CANA-Center for Africans Now in America, Inc. to serve adults and children with disabilities as well as the parents who have children in the prenatal stage to adulthood who face multiple challenges. Trained home visitors (Families as Parents-Leadership Education Neurodevelopmental Disabilities- LEND U of M program) provide long-term, clinically-supervised intensive home visits that focus on helping parents identify strengths and strengthen family relationships.

Case Management

Our highly-qualified general and Mental Health Case Management Service staff provide guidance and support for families of diverse cultural backgrounds who desire help identifying their children’s disabilities, risk factors, safety from abuse or neglect in out of home settings, and resources for children with severe and long-term mental health needs.

Diversion

Minnesota counties refer juvenile offenders (aged 10-17) from diverse cultural backgrounds to us for services ranging from restorative justice programming to diversion groups, outpatient therapy, community reconnection, cultural identity programming, and support services.

Assessment & Testing

Licensed CANA clinical professionals and practitioners provide intake, individual, and/or parental interviews, which result in the development of diagnostic assessments as well as treatment services for clients.

Adolescent Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

This program is for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 who are suicidal, self-injurious, and who have difficulty managing their emotions as well as sustaining relationships. Most clients in higher-level elementary, middle and high school would fit into this program.

With this program, we provide individual therapy, skills groups, and coaching. Our DBT program helps participants learn to become more mindful of their feelings, thoughts and behaviors; regulate their emotions and become more resilient; manage distress and increase impulse control; improve relationships and self-respect; and also regulate emotions, balance change, and navigate acceptance.

Who Would Benefit from DBT?

Individuals who benefit from this approach:

  • Exhibit excessive defiance

  • Struggle to regulate emotions

  • Engage in self-harming behavior

  • Engage in behavior that inhibits quality of life

  • Have difficulty sustaining relationships

  • Are confused about themselves, their emotions, or their behaviors

  • Experience chronic suicidal thoughts

Common diagnoses among DBT clients include depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders as well as personality disorders.
